The Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005

The Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005 has set out guidelines for every business to follow. A dedicated, experienced person in a business must take care of all the fire safety measures, so other people in the premises can rest assured that they are working in a safe environment. The duties of the ‘responsible person’ include:
  • Taking fire precautions to ensure the safety of any employees or relevant persons who are not employees
  • Carrying out, or arranging to carry out if not competent, a fire risk assessment
  • Ensuring adequate firefighting equipment and fire detection are provided
  • Ensuring there are adequate emergency routes, exits and signage
  • Ensuring the maintenance of premises, equipment and devices necessary for the safety of relevant persons
  • Ensuring employees are provided with adequate fire safety training
  • Extinguishers must be serviced annually by a competent person as per BS 5306 parts 3, 8 and 9
